After the flood, the people spoke one language and traveled together on the earth. They came to the plain of Shinar, decided to stay there, and planned to build a very tall tower so everyone would know their name. As the tower grew higher, the people became more and more proud of what they could do. God saw that they had forgotten to depend on Him humbly, so He confused their language, and they could no longer understand one another. The work stopped, and the people spread out in smaller groups who could still understand each other. They went to many places and built new homes. From then on, the world was filled with many families, many places, and many different languages.
The story of the Tower of Babel tells us that pride and arrogance will cause us to be far from God. People want to build a tower reaching to heaven by their own strength, but true greatness comes from humbly relying on God. Our talents and achievements are all gifts from God, and should be used to glorify God rather than to show off ourselves. A humble heart is pleasing to God.
