Jacob loved Joseph dearly and gave him a colorful coat. When his brothers saw it, they became jealous. Joseph had two dreams: bundles of grain bowed down to his bundle, and the sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed down to him. When Joseph told his family about the dreams, his brothers became even more upset, but Jacob kept the matter in mind. Later, Jacob sent Joseph to check on his brothers, who were tending sheep far away. When they saw Joseph in the distance, they made an evil plan. Reuben wanted to protect him and suggested putting him into an empty well first. When a caravan of traders passed by, the brothers handed Joseph over to the traders to be taken to Egypt. Then they brought his bloodstained coat back to Jacob. Jacob was deeply grieved. Although Joseph was far from home, he still trusted that God was with him.
Joseph's brothers let jealousy grow in their hearts until they made a hurtful choice. Jealousy can make us forget the love and grace God has already given us, and it can hurt our family. Yet God still watched over Joseph when he was far from home and stayed with him on the way to Egypt. When we feel sad, left out, or treated unfairly, we can tell God and a trusted adult. God can help us be thankful for what He gives us and rejoice with others when they receive good things.
